It’s not all about oysters – the fish is just as fresh and equally appetising – but oysters are what the Troon restaurant is famous for. Lunches are served Tuesday through Sunday, likewise with dinner, save for Sunday evenings. Situated in Troon Harbour, MacCallum's provides a spectacular setting in which to watch the world go by and the fishing fleet dock – the very same fleet whose catch then makes its way to your plate in record time. With over 30 years in the seafood business, the MacCallum brothers know their stuff. Their goal is to bring the riches locked in Scotland’s natural larder to a wider audience, with an emphasis on the fruits of the sea. The Oyster Bar, the jewel in their crown, encapsulates everything that’s great about Scottish seafood. The lunch menu, which changes daily, offers two courses for a fixed price, with mains based around pan-fried monkfish, turbot tempura, dover sole and grilled fillet of hake. Warm yourself with a bowl of Cullen Skink to start, or save your appetite for dessert, where the prospect of triple chocolate marquise or sticky toffee pudding should hit the spot. Never mind the golf; MacCallum’s alone is reason enough to visit Troon.
